Southeast

Coastal states and cities of Southeastern Brazil.

Overview#

Brazil’s Southeast region concentrates some of the country’s most famous coastlines, combining big cities, sheltered bays, islands and preserved Atlantic Forest. From Espírito Santo down to the North Coast of São Paulo, you’ll find everything from busy urban beaches to quiet, almost wild coves.

Quick facts#

  • Region: Southeast — Coastal states: Espírito Santo (ES), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), São Paulo (SP)
  • Profile: Urban beaches, islands, bays, hiking, diving and water sports
  • Best time to go: Sep–Nov and Mar–Jun (pleasant weather, fewer crowds)
  • High season: Dec–Feb, Carnival and long weekends
  • Main hubs: Rio de Janeiro, Angra dos Reis/Paraty, Santos/Guarujá, Vitória/Guarapari

How to explore the coast#

By car: The BR-101 highway runs along most of the coast, connecting ES–RJ–SP. From the capitals, state highways take you to smaller beach towns and villages.
By plane: Frequent flights to Rio de Janeiro (GIG/SDU), São Paulo (GRU/CGH/VCP) and Vitória (VIX), with easy connections to coastal areas.
By bus: Regular departures from the main bus terminals in each capital to coastal cities.
Tip: During high season, consider traveling on weekdays or at night to avoid heavy traffic.

Where to stay (summary)#

  • Capital cities (Rio, Vitória, Santos): more infrastructure, public transport and nightlife.
  • Bays and islands (Angra, Paraty, Ilhabela): better for nature, boat trips and a “getaway” feel.
  • Holiday towns (Guarujá, Guarapari, Ubatuba): good mix of services, family-friendly beaches and quieter corners.

For couples, small inns and boutique hotels close to the beach work really well; for families and groups, rental homes and apartments with kitchen and parking are usually the most convenient.
